Tuning In

"Is someone playing with the computers?" Carl asked.

He was freaking out, he just lost 4 million dollars that was laundered drug money. Of course he couldn't say that, but he needed to find it.

Tormenting Carl, was his former co-worker Sam Wheat. He just picked up a skill from the ghost who haunts the Subway. The skill was the ability to move things without a body. Sam Wheat is dead, stuck in the afterlife, in the movie Ghost.

He remembered the man who shot him, and he was determined to avenge his untimely death. He lingers around his former home where his girlfriend Molly lives. One day when Molly was out, Sam's killer makes an unexpected visit. He follows Willie, his killer, to his home and remembers the address. He communicates this information through a psychic Oda Mae Brown, and convinces her to warn Molly.

Frightened with this information, and a little bit leery she tells Carl to check it out. Low and behold Carl was not really that great of a friend.

This is another one of my favorite movies, and this is another love story. We seem to be having a theme going on here. Well it is February the month of love.

The afterlife is in the realm of ideals, we being alive cannot ride the river of Styx and visit the plane of the spirits. We cannot punch through some membrane and arrive at the place where the dead "live", at least not that I am aware of.

Let's say that the world of the dead is reachable but the medium in which it is crossed can only be traveled by "special" individuals. In Greek Mythology the individual who could do that was Hermes. He was the messenger of the gods, and associated with language.

Hermeneutics - the branch of knowledge that deals with interpretation, especially of the Bible or literary texts.

Hans-Georg Gadamer is the leading philosopher on hermeneutics. His work can be attributed to four main areas.

  • Philosophical hermeneutics
  • Dialogue within Philosophy
  • Literature
  • Practical Philosophy

Gadamer remained connected with Greek thought especially Plato and Aristotle. When trying to discern Plato's work, Gadamer developed an approach that rejected the idea of hidden meaning to Plato's thought, instead Gadamer focused on Platonic dialogues and their structure. This is critical in order to understand Plato was by working the texts not only by reading the dialogue, but to capture the dialectical structure of Platonic questioning.

From an ontological standpoint we can only learn about the past through archives. In order to better understand scripture or any archive, along comes hermeneutics, that is its function to recover meaning.

Obtaining knowledge from books is key to growing your understanding of the world in its current form. Thousands of volumes have been written and there are more books in libraries than you can shake a stick at. Authors who construct their text are preparing the reader, providing them with meaning of some kind whatever it may be, the knowledge is in there.

I am facinated by the concept of communication. I am not very good at it myself, but the process of information being passed around is intriguing to me. In computer programming there is this protocol used to transfer information between agents, called SOAP. One of the requirements for SOAP is that whatever object is being passed through the protocol it must be serializable, what that means is that you must be able to take an object and convert it into bytes so it can be transfered over the wire and de-serialized into it's original form. Kind of like the movie "The Fly", but less creepy.

Anyways, the goal is to get the meaning out. Gadamer focused on human sciences and wanted to apply hermanuetics as a process to make extraction of information in those desciplines more "scientific".

Or to "release the fly" from the bottle.

"4 million dollars, oh my God what am I going to do with this money?"

Obviously my interests include philosophy. I think thinking and thought are the beginning of every great thing. It’s how we understand and perceive the world. Periodically I’ll change things up and blog about something math or computer science related or even a blog about mythology. I am not political, trendy, or savvy, but I do like a good story. That is why I try and find a movie clip that hints or encompasses what I want to blog about. Sometimes the relevance is there, sometimes it’s a reach and I just really love the movie that I put in the post. The intent and purpose of my blog is to make you think, make me think and together our thoughts can be shared in a collection of material.
