Going back into the wayback machine again, and this one is a success. Alot of times there are things that I am out to do that don’t end up as I thought they would. However, this one ended up just like I asked for. I am a middle distant runner, the events that I ran are the 800 and before they changed the distance to 1500 the 1600 or better known as the mile.
I decided to run track because my history teacher thought that would be something I would be good at. I was like ok, I think I can do that, I did well in elementary school trials of the 600-meter run. I have quite a bit endurance to endure races that are not of short distance, but of slighter longer distances. I am not quite ready for a marathon but it’s on my list.
When I first started I could not keep up with my peers, instead I ended up being left behind to run with Jennifer DeCoito. She wasn’t the fastest girl on the track team, but she was probably the best middle distance runner. I would run with her initially and then I got in to shape and could keep up with my peers. The first race we had we got rained out. I went to high school on the Big Island and lived in a small town of Hilo. It rains in Hilo often but when it came time for my first meet we got rained out due to lightening in the area.
That was a good thing though, because I was not ready. The next week we went to Waimea and I ran my first race in junior varsity and placed decent if I remember. This was my freshman year, and the next year I was urged to join to cross country team. I did, I really enjoyed being a part of a team. Cross country is not really a team sport where players have roles and position, cross country is a team sport though.
I got to go to Maui my sophomore year because prom was happening at the same time and the sprinter team that qualified decided they would rather go to prom. It was a win for my friends and I, we got to go to Maui despite not qualifying in our events. We are by no means sprinters, so needless to say we kind of got our butts kicked, it was ok though we loved it.
My junior and senior year I qualified for state in the 800 and the 1500 hundred. During divisionals my senior year I had a shot at gold in the 800 and the 1500. My good friend Joshua Villanueva stood in my way though. He was the state cross country champ and way more athletic than I was. The race between him and I was kind of like a David versus Goliath sort of bout, I was David in this contest.
The race started out good, the group stayed tight. We were making good time and it was near time for someone to make a move. Crossing the line to complete the third lap and the gun went off it was the last lap, as soon as that gun sounded I kicked it into high gear. I pushed the pace with everything I got, I looked over to our bench and everyone was on their feet getting as close as they could to the track to see how this one was going to end. I pushed with everything that I had, got to the back stretch and was out of gas, Josh caught me and I was done for. I’ve never won anything in my life, so I pleaded with him “Hey Josh, let me win brah.” I asked him. He gave me a funny look and sprinted to the finish. I lost.
He came up to me afterwards and said that I should never give up, and don’t beg for glory, go out and take it. This was the week before states and I was closing up my senior year, getting ready for college. States was at Maui and I had to take my AP test there so it was a little hectic. I made alternate for the 800 and alternate for the 1500, my quest for a medal was just about over. Josh Villanueva decided he was going to scratch the 1500 and focus on the 3000. I was stoked, I was back in the game. If I were to place 5th in the finals I would get a medal, not some crappy BIIF medal, a state medal.
I asked Moromi Abe (she was an exchange student from Japan that was on the track team) if she would write the number 5 in Japanese on my hand sort of for an omen or good luck. She did, the character is go, it looks like an h with two bars on it 五
The 1500 final race started out great. We were flying on the rubber track, bunched together until the straight away on the back stretch. That was when the leader of the pack took off, I dropped to 7th place and was trying to keep up. On the back curve the guy in front of me clipped the guy in front of him and they both fell to the ground. I saw my opportunity and drove it home, I got my medal, still have it somewhere.
