I am a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series. I have played most of them, some of the titles that went to Gameboy I have not played and the online version that came out in 2000 I think are probably the only ones that I have missed out on. The early style of the Final Fantasy series is a traditional RPG, with turn-based attack system with open world traversal. The Kingdom Hearts active battle shift is cool, but I miss the turn-based style of the battles. I could do without the dialog that was added in Final Fantasy X, it’s more fun to read the dialog in my opinion.
Square redid Final Fantasy 7; I am going to say that is the best game ever made. Best graphics, best story, best music, best everything. Naoki Hamaguchi did a phenomenal job modernizing the 1996 classic into an amazing absolutely must play remake. Square is coming out with another FF7 remake that continues the original. The first remake just had Midgar, the next one brought in Yuffie and expanded outside of Midgar, the next one I am getting for sure, take my money already, I want to play it.
Square was asked if they plan on remaking all the original PS One games, unfortunately they are not going to remake FF8 which is sad, the battle system with junctioning was the best system in my opinion. No more magic points, you just steal the magic from enemies, awesome sauce, running out of MP sucks, and you never have enough ethers.
Enough rambling, I have a project that I am working on, and I am going to call it Paradice Lost. It will be a RPG with different classes of characters, there will be humans, elves, goblins, and dwarves. The game will introduce an aging feature that prevents players from grinding and leveling up their characters to be unstoppable. With Paradice Lost your characters age, they get stronger yes, but at a certain point continuing to battle will make them weaker with age. It will be turned based battle, and open world third person view. There will be vehicles, and the goal of the game is to get back to Paradice, which we get banished from and the only way back it to find the key to get back in.
I got a copy of 3ds Max and depending on how much I want to put into it I will create all the models, I am definitely writing the code, it will be in the DirectX SDK in C++ stack, I am not going to use Unity or any engine to facilitate this. I may purchase some models for buildings and weapons, but I think I will do all the characters, or try to anyway, I am not very skilled in art, but I’ll give it a try. The sound system will probably use FMODStudio, I think that is probably the best “free” audio integration for games. You can do 3d sound and all sorts of stuff with it, I will change that probably to yes, I am going to use FMOD.
I am not sure what I will do for monsters, probably a mixture of mythical creatures and animals seems reasonable for a good RPG. There will be no pay to win in this game, no skins or flare, just stock. I am not trying to build a gold mine, just a good RPG. This is going to take forever, but I will share my progress as it comes along. There are somethings that I am not quite sure how to handle, the game probably should be available to play on the internet, so I need to figure out a way to host a server, probably go with Azure if it’s not too expensive, definitely want Windows and not Linux, although Linux could work if it’s cheaper I suppose.
The video clip for this post is from a ballroom scene with Squall and Rinoa, I thought it sounded familiar as one of Bach’s waltzes but couldn’t quite nail it down. Here are some details about it Waltz for the Moon
