Mary Swanson needed to get to the airport. Her limo driver, Lloyd was determined to make that so. When she got out of the limo and was on her way to catch her plane, Lloyd not wanting to see her go watched her stroll her way to her departure gate. Not paying attention he slams into a cab in front of him. Mary notices the commotion and turns to see her limo drive wrapped in an airbag waving back at her. She is flabbergasted at what had just happened she looks and waves then drops her briefcase. Lloyd not wanting her to forget it, runs apeshit towards it to try and catch her before he misses the opportunity to get it back to her.

Little did Lloyd know, Mary was instructed to leave the briefcase full of money in a specific spot where the kidnapper’s accomplices could claim the money. Just before they could grab the money, Lloyd saves the day…well sort of, he is not able to get it back to her in time, however after chatting with her he knows where she is headed, to Aspen, and he had the briefcase.

The two thugs who were supposed to pick up the briefcase follow Lloyd back to his apartment and knock on the door. Looking at who the visitors were, Lloyd asks his roommate Harry if he had paid the gas bill. Harry had not, so they fled not wanting to face the music of their passed due bill. But they did leave a note.

“These guys must be pros.” Joe says.

“What makes you think that?” J.P. asks.

“They must be, how else would they know that I have gas.” Joe says.

The fact that Lloyd knew the hitman had gas was not a fact, it was just a coincidence that he had not paid his gas bill and for some reason thought the two hitman at his door were from the gas company.

If something is true absolutely regardless of the individual propositions that make up the statement that is a tautology. Some examples of a tautology would be:

“It is going to rain today or it is not going to rain today.”

“All humans are mammals.”

“The pen is blue or the pen is not blue.”

Usually a tautology involves an either or condition of mutually exclusive things, one or the other, the combination of them would be true regardless of the circumstance or the statement is true by definition.

In logic if something is true based on an OR’ed condition the same statement can be replaced with the reverse of a logical AND of the OR’ed items.

For example say that you can get your favorite appetizer half off on Wednesdays at your favorite restaurant. You can also get them half off on any day that they are open but after 5 PM. So typically you would think of a single instance where you would make that statement true and your appetizers are half off. If I go on Wednesday OR I go after 5 PM.

Now the reverse of each of those would be “it is not Wednesday” and “its before 5 PM”. In order for you to get your half off at least one of those statements must be false, if they are both true then the reverse of that is you pay full price.

Lloyd and Harry finally make it to Aspen, but they have no idea where to go to return Mary’s briefcase.

“We could look her up in the phonebook.” Harry suggests.

“What’s her last name?” he asks.

“Gee I don’t remember, Swimmy, Swammy, Swanson…” Lloyd banters.

Harry and Lloyd do end up giving Mary back her briefcase, but filled with a bunch of IOUs instead of all the money, it’s expensive to wander around in a resort town. Lloyd wants to know flat out what kind of chances he has with Mary. Is it one in a hundred, one in a thousand?

“More like one in a million.” she tells him.

“So you’re telling me there’s chance.” he smiles.

Obviously my interests include philosophy. I think thinking and thought are the beginning of every great thing. It’s how we understand and perceive the world. Periodically I’ll change things up and blog about something math or computer science related or even a blog about mythology. I am not political, trendy, or savvy, but I do like a good story. That is why I try and find a movie clip that hints or encompasses what I want to blog about. Sometimes the relevance is there, sometimes it’s a reach and I just really love the movie that I put in the post. The intent and purpose of my blog is to make you think, make me think and together our thoughts can be shared in a collection of material.
