Hannibal Lecter: Do you know what a roller pigeon is, Barney? They climb high and fast, then roll over and fall just as fast toward the earth. There are shallow rollers and deep rollers. You can’t breed two deep rollers, or their young will roll all the way down, hit, and die. Officer Starling is a deep roller, Barney. We should hope one of her parents was not.
Clarice Starling was sent to learn from Dr. Hannibal Lecter when she was a student at the FBI Academy. She was seeking advice in order to search through the clues to apprehend a serial killer known as Buffalo Bill. Lecter being a clinical psychologist is keen to behavior and the human mind, however he has not met someone quite as fascinating as lovely Clarice. He assesses her as being a deep roller meaning she enjoys the extreme trials of life, and hopefully one of her parents was not or she is doomed. Clarice without much effort charms Lector and gains his tutelage.
Psychology by definition is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context. There is a lot that makes up the human mind. Thoughts are churning all the time. There is reason to suggest that our behavior is based upon our language, we think in language so our thoughts are only as meaningful as our language that constructs our thoughts. Nomenclature can be considered the beginning of understanding and purpose. A few years ago the Washington Redskins changed their name. The previous name was deemed offensive because it was politically incorrect. So now instead of being the quarterback (haha) on the Redskins 2024 roster, you would have been part of the Washington Football Team for awhile, until they finally came up with the Washington Commanders.
David Hume had a thought. He wanted to organize philosophy in the same manner that Newton did with physics. Newton’s physics required the ability to represent the infinitesimal and infinite for capturing instantaneous change in calculus. The notion of limits need this type of understanding as the foundation for derivatives ( rate of change ) and integrals ( amount of change ). Speed is derivative of position, and acceleration is the derivative of speed. Leibniz published the work on calculus before Newton, but Newton due to his position in the scholarly community was seen as more of the founder. The symbol for infinite a horizontal looking eight ( 8 years ago today, been awhile ) represents the very large or very small number, you cannot empirically observe this value but you can represent it with Newton’s/Leibniz’s approach to mathematics.
David Hume believed strongly in empiricism and disagreed with the rationalists that truth can only be found through reason. Truth can be experienced according to Hume. The world does possess truth and can be empirically found for those who know how to find it. So he sought out to lay the blueprint on how we need to use our senses and change our thinking to seek out the truth.
Hume’s work “A Treatise of Human Nature” is considered one of the most influential works of the history of philosophy. He presents the idea of placing all science and philosophy on a similar platform. Using the same approach with natural science and the scientific method, he desired to apply the same approach in the study of human psychology, and to discover the “extent and force of human understanding”. Because if we want to know, we need to know how to know.
